It is important to have "Health Goals" and a personal coach that can encourage you. A recent
study showed people that walk their dog will make less excuses to go for a walk than two friends agreeing to go for a walk.
In 1977, I was attending UCLA and working part time at Nautilus Gym and in walks the Hulk. I didn't recognize it
was the “Hulk", at first, so since the gym was not very crowded I worked out with him. It was the most challenging
and hardest workout I had ever done but I was up for it. I was a lot thinner than Lou yet I could lift some of the
same weight on some exercises and that sort of puzzled him. I learned he was Deaf. We talked through his interpreter. We
worked out for almost two hours. I was spent after an hour and a half. Then his interpreter told me he wanted to know if I
wanted to run to the beach and back (an 8 mi. run!!!) I was dead. I smiled and politely refused.
I knew the physics of leverage and force. I knew the definition of Power.
Power = Distance x Time / mass (the amount of weight and how quick you can get it up! The blast factor! So I worked
out that way at work) and with fixed lever machines if you knew the exact points of leverage you had an advantage.
I had worked out on those machines for months and also used free weights whereas he was new at the machines. My
knowledge, adrelline and then fitness level allowed me to match him for awhile. But even though I ran often I was just
too spent to run to the beach and back.
So what is the point of this story?
The body, being made of trillion
of cells, complex interconnected physiological systems all run by a central nervous system constantly reacting to our conscious
and un-conscious thoughts and environmental stimuli, has a "capacity". We are unique, random, and highly reactive.
Some more self-motivated others less. There is only one way to increase your capacity. Exercise it. We often only
think of exercise as physical and a bit mental nowadays. The reality is that exercise needs to apply to all aspects
of the bodies systems. Our digestive capacity to absorb nutrients, vitamins and minerals, our capacity to
store vitamins and minerals for later years, our hormonal and endocrine system, our brain and nervous system, our cardio
pulmonary system, and our muscular/skeletal system. Health is
not always about being the strongest or best skilled Health is about being inteligent about how you exercise
your systems. "Know thyslef" socretes applys even more to people undertaking athletic endoevors.
Emotional, phyiscal and mental health is yours to understand, exercise and control.
Be your own coach. Set some Health Goals. Study and Help Others.
